Life has a way of testing us in ways we never saw coming. For me, that test came in the form of a rare autoimmune disease that flipped my world upside down. I went from feeling strong, independent, and in control of my life to barely recognizing the person in the mirror. My body was changing, my plans were unraveling, and my faith—something I had always leaned on—felt like it was slipping through my fingers.

But looking back now, I see that my lowest moments were the very things that deepened my faith. Here’s what I’ve learned about trusting God when life feels unbearable.

1. Faith Isn’t Built in Comfort

For the longest time, I thought I had strong faith because I believed in God, went to church, and prayed. But real faith isn’t just believing when life is easy—it’s holding on when everything is falling apart. When I got sick, I realized that my faith had never really been tested before. It wasn’t until I had nothing else to lean on that I truly understood what it meant to trust God completely.

2. Surrendering Control Brings Peace

One of the hardest things about my journey was realizing that I wasn’t in control. I wanted answers, I wanted healing on my timeline, and I wanted to wake up and feel like myself again. But God had other plans. It wasn’t until I stopped fighting and surrendered to His will that I found peace. Surrender isn’t giving up—it’s acknowledging that God’s plan is greater than ours.

3. God is Still Present in the Pain

There were days when I questioned everything. Why would a loving God allow me to suffer like this? Why wasn’t He answering my prayers the way I wanted? But through it all, I learned that God wasn’t absent—He was walking with me through the fire. Sometimes, His presence isn’t in the immediate healing but in the strength to endure.

4. Trials Reveal What Truly Matters

Getting sick stripped away so many things I thought defined me—my ability to work, my routines, my independence. But in that stripping away, I found clarity. I realized that my identity wasn’t in what I could do but in who I was in Christ. The things I once prioritized suddenly felt insignificant compared to the deeper relationship I was building with God.

5. Faith Requires Action

Trusting God doesn’t mean sitting back and waiting for things to change. It means stepping out in faith, even when we don’t see the full picture. It means praying even when we don’t feel like it, worshiping even when it hurts, and believing in His goodness even when we don’t understand His ways.

Final Thoughts

I wouldn’t have chosen this trial, but I wouldn’t trade what it’s taught me for anything. My faith is no longer just something I talk about—it’s something I live. If you’re going through a season of struggle, I want you to know that God sees you. He hasn’t forgotten you. And even in the middle of your pain, He is working.

Lean in. Trust Him. And watch how He strengthens you through the fire.
